Hiram, like his father and father-in-law, was still a boy when his father died. He was recently married and living in Piqua, Ohio when the War between the States began. After his initial enlistment he was promoted Full Corporal on 23 Aug 1862. Mustered in Company C, Ohio 94th Infantry Regiment on 23 Aug 1862. His regiment served in the western department first in Kentucky at Perryville, then in Tennessee at Chicagmauga, Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. They also participated in the Sherman's Atlanta campaign. He mustered out on 05 Jun 1865 after the Grand Review at Washington, DC. After returning to Indiana, he was a butcher in Knightstown, IN where he served as sheriff from 1875-1879. After his wife Hannah died in 1887 at the Kansas ranch of her brother-in-law John Westcott, he lived in Pittsburgh. He is included in the Civil war veteran schedule there in 1890. In the 1900 census he is still in Pittsburgh working as a cook at the Allegheny City Home & Insane Asylum in Claremont. He died at the home of his daughter in Saugatuck, Michigan in 1913.
