Baptismal witnesses in original microfilm A. Olafson, A. Lindblad, Charlotta Petterson.
She traveled alone to Chicago in 1881 at the age of 22. Jill Seaholm at the Swenson Center says this was not unusual; she had seen records of 13-year-olds emigrating alone. Ticket # 18:13:12934.
Arne Strang adds that she emigrated from Sofia parish Jönköping.
Never married -- this is the Aunt Hilma that young Ronald Henderson would sometimes walk over to visit, in Chicago, probably in the 1920s.
Letter 12 March 1936 from August J. Almquist, superintendent of the Swedish Covenant Old People's Home, 2735 Foster Ave., Chicago, to Emy Lou Boring, 4432 N. Paulina: "It was decided to accept Miss [Hilma] Stenberg into the Home in her turn, when room is available. Your offer of the monthly payment of $40.00 was also accepted with just one change, that it would include ordinary medication but not hospitalization."
Burial in Lot 18, Section 14, Grave 21 (previously Section L, Grave 240)
Her last will and testament leaves all her property after debts settled to "my nieces, Ruth Mary Boring and Emma Louis[e] Boring," and appoints "my Brother-in-Law, August Philip Boring to be Executor" without having to give bond. Dated 10 February 1927. As it happened, she outlived August.
A mysterious entry in the Illinois marriage index has a Gustaf Paline marrying a Hilma Stenberg 7 November 1886 in Cook County, license # 00108529.
