    Hilda Virginia Knight Cumrine died at the age of 83 on Monday, October 19, 2009, Langdale Hospice House. She was born in Enterprise, Alabama, the daughter of James Ewell Knight and Ida Commander Knight. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Ray E. Cumrine, Valdosta. She is survived by her sister, Jean Fleming of Phoenix City, Alabama and her niece, Danelle Fleming of Louisiana.

    Hilda Cumrine spent her life in service to others through community and church activities. She loved birds and animals and for most of her life was caring for or raising orphaned or injured birds and wild animials. She adopted many cats and dogs.

    She enjoyed working in the 150 student Sunday School Primary Department of the First Presbyterian Church of Babylon, New York as a teacher and superintendent. She was instrumental in involving that church in working with missionaries to mountain children in Tennessee and Kentucky by providing gifts and clothing, sewing baby clothing and quilts and in furnishing supplies to poor Indians on Indian Reservations.
    She worked in the Primary Sunday School department of the Nauraushaun Presbyterian Church of Pearl River, New York and was ordained a Deacon in that church. She worked as a volunteer in New York State Mental Hospital at Rockland and was recognized by the Chief of the Hospital staff for her work.

    She and her husband moved to Valdosta in 1973. At the First Presbyterian Church of Valdosta, she immediately became active in delivering meals in the Break Bread Together Program and later became the co-coordiantor and then coordinator of the program. She coordinated that program for 27 years until she retired. She was recognized by the J. C. Penney Golden Rule Award, Betty Crocker/Bacos America’s Top Volunteers, the First Presbyterian Church and was recognized by Proclamation by the City of Valdosta. Since July 2007, Mrs. Cumrine had resided at Fellowship Home in Valdosta.
