  • Pages 164-69. 17-18 Nov. 1735. Henry Downs of St. Mark's Parish, Orange County, planter to Hezekiah Rhoades of same. Lease and release; for £30 current money. 100 acres mongst the little mountains, part of 8,500 acres granted James Taylor by pattent 21 July 1722 and by him given to Thomas Rucker and by Thomas Rucker sold to Henry Downs by deed 4 March 1727... corner of Thomas Jackson's... in Mr. Baylor's line... on the north ease side Thomas Jackson's spring branch... now in tenure of Hezekiah Rhoads. (signed) Henry Downs. Wit: William Bohannan, Battle Harrison, James Cox. 18 Nov. 1735. Acknowledged by Henry Downs. 16 March 1735 [1736]. Jane Downs relinquished her right of dower in land formerly conveyed by her husband Henry Downs. [Orange County Virginia Deed Book 1, Dorman, pg. 14].


Will of Hezekiah Rhodes

  • Pages 333-34. Will of Hezekiah Rhodes of the County of Orange and St. Thomas's Parish, being very sick and weak in body, dated 8 March 1762.
My beloved wife Ann Rhodes shall have the lent of my whole estate during her widowhood and not to bassel or wast any part thereof and if my said wife should chance to marry or die then my estate should be sold at auction and equally divided among my children and grandchild Epaphroditus Rhodes, Hannah Daughauney, Mary Rhodes, John Dickinson son of Jane Dickinson, excepting one horse called Woolf and one bridle and saddle and one gun which he is now possessed with and all my smith's tools which I give my son above his equal share.
My daughter Mary should be allowed £2.10.- current money yearly untill she shall marry, above her equal share.
One Negro boy George I reserve out of my will in order to sell to pay my debts.
My said wife and my son Epaphroditus Rhodes executors.
