Facts and Events
Alabama origins are referenced on the 1860 census entry for the H.F. Hudson family, Prarie Twp., Franklin Co., Arkansas. The three children shown living with him and his wife in the 1860 Census (Keith 5 yrs., Bradley (female) 3, and Henry 2) are all shown as being born in Arkansas. Herod's daughter, Sallie Ann (Hudson) DeWitt, listed her father's place of birth as 'Indiana' in the 1910 census, however. According to the Sallie DeWitt 1981 Genealogy, Herod served for the Confederacy during the Civil War. He owned a farm in Grand Prarie, Franklin County, Arkansas. One of his grandaughters, Mary Ellen Dewitt Baker, daughter of Sallie Ann Hudson, said in a letter dated 4/27/1982 to her niece Sallie Lee DeWitt in Raymondville, Texas, "Most of the people who moved to Arkansas after the Civil War were from the north. The Hudsons were from the south. Men used to ride their horses at a fast gate and throw lighted torches in the front door of my grandfather Hudson's home, hoping to frighten him off the land so they could settle on it. He stayed, bless him." The Sallie DeWitt Genealogy lists H.F. Hudson's date of death as 24 Dec 1872. The Sallie DeWitt 1981 Genealogy also states that Herod Felix Hudson died of pneumonia on Christmas Eve, on his farm in Arkansas, after walking home barefoot from Georgia during the Civil War. A probate packet in the archives at the Franklin County Clerk's office (Charleston Division) lists H.F. Hudson as "Dec'd Feb. 12, 1876". This probate packet was found by chance, as it was not listed in the official index book for the probate files. It was found by Jerry D. Abshier during a research visit to the Frankliln County Clerk's office in Charleston, on May 9, 2005. The date listed as his date of death in the probate file was the same as his date of probate (12 February 1876), which is very unlikely. It is more likely that he died some time between the time of his will (23 December 1872) and the date of probate (12 February 1876). The executor of his estate was his son, K.E. Hudson. His probate document was attested to by someone named E.T.A. Northum, probably a relative of Adaline's. One of the witnesses to Herod's will was Charles DeWitt. Herod's wife, Rebecca Adaline, was his executrix. A subsequesnt research visit was performed by Jerry D. Abshier to the Franklin County Clerk's office in Ozark, Arkansas on November 4, 2007. Probate Record Book D - 1874 to 1882 had many journal entries related to the estate of Herod F. Hudson (ppg. 61, 65, 67, 75, 91, 103, 105, 108, 121, 139, 201, 203, 213, 226, 234, 251, 254, 257, 259, 267, 273, 294, 306, 327). The dates of the entries range from 2/1/1875 to 12/5/1878. Kieth E. Hudson is listed as the administrator of the estate in many of the entries. Some of the entries relate to H.F. Hudson's children who were minors at the time of his death (Ada C. Hudson, pg 203; Henry R. Hudson, pg. 234; Elmer M. Hudson, pg. 306; Nellie P. Hudson, pg. 327). Other entries were requests from Kieth Hudson to cultivate the lands of H.F. Hudson. Herod Felix Hudson was buried in the King Cemetery, near Grand Prarie, Franklin County, Arkansas. I (Jerry D. Abshier) visited the King Cemetery in June, 2000, but could not locate Herod Felix Hudson's grave marker. I did locate grave markers for several of his children, however. References
