The family immigrated to America from Sogn og Fjordane (county), Norway on the ship Jorgen sailing from Bergen, Norway on May 4, 1854 to New York. The ship docked in Albany, New York on June 30. All possessions were loaded onto wagons to take to the train station. In Albany, New York, Herman and Ingebrit (son) and a neighbor were parched so went to find water. When they did not return, Anna sent the next two sons to find them. Herman, Ingebrit and the neighbor were found by a well, dead. Either the water was poisoned or they had heat stroke - drank very cold water and died from shock. Anna had to pay $28 for three 3 burials before boarding the train for the trip to their destination in Wisconsin.

Anna and the 7 to 9 children moved on, traveling to Prairie Du Chine and Lansing, Michigan by boat and then to Cushing, Wisconsin. At the time, Eli, the youngest, was 7.
