Herbert Price worked in coal mining when a younger man. He eventually bought a farm east of Riley, Indiana, which he farmed with his son Ernest Ray. His daughter Maxine described him as a sincere, honest, loving father. He rarely bought anything on credit, always saving until he had the cash -- even when buying the farm. Shortly after granddaughter Charr was born, he had a heart attack and was confined to bed. Baby Charr was laid in bed with him while everyone else went about the farm. He loved it until he had to put up with a dirty diaper. Later, when Charr was about 5 years old, he taught her to read from the first grade reader. He was a small wirey man with hair that remained dark (almost black) until the day he died.
