Henry Alexander Wilson was born in 1893 at Salford near Manchester, the youngest child of a furniture dealer called Ernest Henry Wilson and his wife Christina Ralston. Henry Alexander's father seemingly disappeared some time before 1901.

Having been born and baptised in Salford, Henry and his mother and sisters moved away from the Manchester area. By 1901 they were living in the Everton area of Liverpool. In 1911 they were living at Wallasey in Cheshire, close to his mother's native Birkenhead, and Henry was working as a clerk. He clearly went on to train as an accountant, which is how he was described when he acted as executor for his mother's will after her death in 1923.
