Dora May Wilson was born in the southern suburbs of Manchester in 1888, daughter of a furniture dealer named Ernest Henry Wilson and his wife Christiana Ralston.
When Dora was small, the family moved to Pendleton in Salford, then later on to Liverpool and the Wirral. Dora's father has not been sighted after 1891. Dora became a book keeper in the dressmaking industry.
