A student, studying medicine in Windham at 1850 census, also found in Waterford census as medical student. Graduated from Bowdoin Medical College in 1853. Living in Gorham, NH at 1860 census with brother Peter, personal estate valued at $500. In Gorham at 1870 census with real estate valued at $1500 and personal estate value of $1400. Living in Berlin, NH at 1880 census.

On May 12, 1865, Dr. Henry Frost Wardwell, was serving as the Assistant Surgeon, 4th Regiment, N.H. Infantry-"Official Army Register of the Volunteer Force of the U.S. Army", Part 1:73, 1865 (reprint 1987)

Enlisted as a Assistant Surgeon on 31 March 1865 at the age of 37 Commission in Company U, 4th Infantry Regiment New Hampshire on 11 April 1865. Mustered out Company U, 4th Infantry Regiment New Hampshire on 23 August 1865 in Raleigh, NC

"Dr. Wardwell, and his daughter of Gorham, were thrown from their carriage on Main Street on Saturday, 8th, inst.. something breaking about the coupling. The doctor was dragged some distance but was not seriously hurt. The daughter was somewhat bruised on the forehead." -The New Hampshire Patriot 19 August 1874

"Berlin boasts of two physicians, Dr. Wardwell and Dr. Locke. Dr. W. I have met several times. He was a Maine man, having been born in Albany. He is a very smart, well-educated man, and just such a physician as one can have confidence in. He has two accomplished daughters, who have charge of the schools at Berlin Falls, which is quite a village. He also has one son who will probably some day be an M.D.; at present he is principal of a high school in Bath, Maine." "Surgeon Wardwell was born March 9, 1928, at Albany in the state of Maine, and was the son of James and Fanny (Frost) Wardwell, and a grandson of Peter Wardwell. He received his preliminary education at common schools and at North Bridgton and Paris (Maine) Academies. Commenced his professional education in 1849 at Windham, Me., under the direction of Luther W. Houghton, M.D., as preceptor. Attended three courses of medical lectures at Harvard and the medical department of Bowdoin College and was graduated from the latter in 1853. He located the same year at Gorham, N.H., where he remained for twenty-six years, including his service in the army, and then removed to Berlin and remained there nearly thirteen years until his death, which occurred December 26, 1891.

He became a member of the Fourth New Hampshire Regiment in March, 1865, and was appointed assistant surgeon April 11, 1865, remaining in the service until the regiment was mustered out of the United States service August 23, 1865. His place of residence being isolated from any large centers, he never became a member of medical societies but he was a member of Masonic Lodges in Gorham and Berlin and also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. He was also a member of the board of education in 1885, as well as examining surgeon for the Pension Department. His biographer says of him:

'Although not a member of any medical society to my knowledge, his influence among his medical brethren was most potent. Being a keen observer and possessing rare judgement, his opinions were always considered of much importance.'

Married first, November 6, 1854, Miss Almira E. Head of Shelburne, N.H., who died about twenty years since; second, June 31 (sic) 1881, Miss Mary A. Wilson of Berlin, who survives him.

Children: Charles H., a member of the legal fraternity, now practicing in Boston; Fanny, who married Alfred E. Bean of Berlin, and Mary Elizabeth, who graduated from Wellesley in 1891 and is now teaching in the State Normal School in Connecticut." -History of the New Hampshire Surgeons in the War of the Rebellion; Granville Priest Conn; Ira C.
