DR. HENRY C. SKAGGS MONTGOMERY - Services for Dr. Henry C, Skaggs, 70, one of Montgomery's leading citizens, will be Monday at 2:30p.m. at the Methodist church. The former mayor died of a heart ailment he had suffered for three years. Dr. Skaggs had served six two year terms as mayor, starting in 1940 and ending in 1952. He served as a Republican despite the usual Democratic margin. Dr. Skaggs did not permit his illness to interrupt his practice and remained active until his death. He died in his office while attending a patient. He had delivered thousands of babies in the city and Fayette County. He was a native of Victor and began his medical practice in 1903 as a coal camp doctor for the Lowmoor Coal Co. at Kaymoor. He went to Montgomery in 1916 and bought the home and office of the late Dr. E. Y. Willis. He had occupied both continuously since. He served in the House of Delegates from 1911-12; the County court from 1926-32; and the City Council from 1920-24. He was a charter member and past president of the Rotary Club. His memberships included Coal Valley Lodge 74, AF&AM Montgomery Chapter 47, Royal Arch Masons, Knights Templar of Charleston and Beni Kedem Shrine. He also held honorary memberships in the Fayette County and state medical societies. Dr. Skaggs' second wife, Mrs. Zola Butterfield Skaggs, died last Aug, 17. His first wife died in 1943. He was a member of the board of stewards of Montgomery Methodist Church. The Rev, Dr. H. W. Ware will officiate at the services and burial will be In Montgomery Memorial Park at London, Graveside rites will be conducted by the Coal Valley Masonic Lodge. Surviving by his first wife are three sons, Henry C, Jr. and Dr. Joseph T. of Charleston and Robert C. of Huntington; two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Jenkins of Albuquerque, N, M., and Mrs. Harriett Hearst of Clarion, Pa.; six grandchildren; and two stepsons, Dr. Raymond A. Updyke of Montgomery and Fred Updyke of Marmet. By his second marriage he is survived by two stepsons, Donald Butterfield, USAF, La Mesa, Calif., and Dr. Gordon Butterfield of the Army, San Antonio; and eight grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs, Mae Cox of Clearwater, Fla. The body is at B. C. Hooper Funeral Home in Montgomery and will be removed to the Montgomery Methodist Church an hour before the services.
