Note by Tammyhensel: In the 1970s my grandmother sent me a copy of a brief Martin family history written by her cousin Julius C. Martin based on a family Bible and his own research. In it he states: "Benjamin Martin was the father of James Martin, and Benjamin's father's name was Henry Martin. Henry's father's name was Peter Martin. . . He [Peter] had several sons, among them being Henry, who married Sarah Bryan, daughter of John Bryan." Julius Martin mentions 4 sons of Peter in his genealogy: Henry, James, John, and William.
This misconception also appears in the book Happy Valley, History and Genealogy by Thomas Felix Hickerson published in 1940. I don't know if Hickerson got his information from Julius or vice versa. But it is now known that this is bad connection and that that Henry's father was John Martin of New Kent, Virginia, and not Peter Martain. There are several land records including both John and Henry, and records including Henry and Benjamin, to connect the three generaions. Henry is mentioned in John's Will, and Benjamin in Henry's Will. Henry is probably the Henry Martin listed in the baptism record at St. Pete Parish, New Kent County, Virginia Colony in 1708; and the Henry whose Will was probated on 13 Oct. 1757,

The Peter Martin or Martain Family – First Martin Immigrants to America
In the Book "Our Heritage" Mrs. Margaret Walker Freel wrote:
"Peter Martin was the first of the family to come to America. He came from Germany and built a home in the Chickahominy Swamp in Virginia."
A copy of a newspaper article (date unknown) by Miss Ruth Linney, a Martin family historian, now deceased, states that Peter Martin came from France and settled in Virginia at Chickahominy Swamp or river. James Martin wrote that he came from Germany, but Julius Martin discovered by research that he was Piere Martin of France. These writers agree that Henry Martin was the son of Peter Martin. Peter Martin had several children, though there is record of only three: James, John and Henry."
According to Mrs. Freel, Benjamin Martin - who married Diana Harrison and migrated to Wilkes Co. N.C. in 1782 - is said to be a descendant of Peter Martin. Miss Ruth Linney reported that Peter Martin married Mary Anthony Rapine of Goochland Co., Va., that their son Henry married Sarah - a daughter of John Bryan - and that Benjamin, son of Henry and Sarah Bryan Martin, married Diana Harrison. The Martin / Martain and Rapine families were French Huguenot refugees who settled around 1700 in Mannachin Town, King William Parish, Virginia, on the James River.
The children of Henry and Sarah Bryan Martin were: Randolph, John, William, Jesseh, Henry, Benjamin (b. 4/8/1746 d. 10/31/1821), Diane, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Mary.

Henry Martin made his will in Albemarle Co. on 11 March 1752. He left 40 s hillings to his sons, Henry and John Martin. Henry left the land to his wi fe, Ann Martin, and at her death the sons were to have it. He also left 1 33 acres on the mouth of Roundabout Creek to his son, William, 133 acres u pper plantation to son James Martin, and the remaining land to his son, Be njamin Martin. Wit: John Raine, William Tucker and Mary Sprouce. Exors.: w ife and son, William Martin. Securities: Thomas and William Appleberry and William Creasy. Will was proved Albemarle Co. 13 Oct 1757.
