In 1874 Henry's family immigrated to America and settled at West Salem, Wisconsin, working on a farm. In 1877 the family moved to a farm near Welcome. Henry's wife, Margareta, came to America with her older sister in 1882 at the age of 16 and lived in Chicago, where she worked as a maid In 1877 she came to Minnesota. Henry and Margareta were married in Welcome, Minnesota. After their marriage they moved to a farm in Rolling Green Township in Martin County.
