!Obituary; Henry Hood; Waterloo Press; February 23, 1911 In the death of Henry Hood, DeKalb loses one of her substantial citizens, who during the period of his activity was a prominent factor in the development of the community. ... for many years prior to his death he had been afflicted with Motor Ataxia or what is commonly called creeping paralysis. ... Henry Hood, son of John Hood and Susan Hartman Hood, was born in York County, Penn, Aug 14, 1828 and died at his home in Union Street, Waterloo, Feb 18, 1911, aged 82 years, 6 months and 4 days. His parents moved to Stark County, Ohio in 1842 and in 1843 they settled on the farm in Smithfield township where he continued to reside untill 1888, when he moved to Waterloo, but for many years after continued his supervision of the farm, devoting much of his time to its improvement. He was married in 1856 to Emeline M. Duncan, to which union were born four children, Isadora, Maude, Cyrus and William. His wife died October, 1864 and he again married in 1874 to Mary C. Baumgardner, and to this union was born one child, Lulu C. Hood. His second wife died in February, 1877. His five children survive him, the two daughters Isadora and Lulu, having lived with him administering to his comforts and discharging with fidelity the household duties. The other daughter, Mrs. Mortoff has resided in Steuben County. His son Cyrus Hood, is a conductor on the B. & O. railway and resides in Chicago Junction, OH and his son William resides in Gary, IN. Besides these children of the deceased there survive seven grandchildren, one brother, Samuel Hood, and one sister, Susan Clark of Waterloo. His children were all present at the funeral which was held at the home at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Feb 21, conducted by Rev. N. Leas Stambaugh, pastor of the M. E. church and the burial took place on the family lot in the Waterloo cemetry. A Mahognay casket was provided for the burial of Mr. Hood and the flowers were beautiful and tastefully arrranged. A large number of old neighbors from the country attended the funeral of Mr. Hood, Tuesday showing their freindship. The family desire to extend their thanks to all the neighbors and friends for the kindly assistance and sympathy during the long illness of the deceased and also in the hours of their bereavement and sorrow.
