HENRY C HOLLINGER, 1923-2003 Civil engineer noted for attention to detail

LIMA OH - Henry C Hollinger, who helped design roads, overpasses, and sew er projects as a civil engineer, died Friday in Lima Convalescent Home.

Mr. Hollinger, 79, a resident of the home since breaking a hip in 1999, di ed of an infection, said his wife, Marjorie.

He worked for Allen CO the city of Lima, and the firm of Kohli & Kaliher A ssociates in a career of more than three decades. He was known for his att ention to detail, said Dan Bucher, who worked with Mr. Hollinger at the fi rm.

"He was very meticulous," Mr. Bucher said.

Mr. Hollinger was Lima’s city engineer from 1955 to 1960 and was the city ’s first public works director from 1960 to 1963.

He joined Kohli & Kaliher in 1964 and remained with the firm 24 years. F or 16 of those years, he was managing partner.

Mr. Bucher said Mr. Hollinger helped oversee such projects as constructi on of a grade-separation in Lima in the 1980s. The project rerouted N St u nder two rail lines. "For the city of Lima, it was a major project," Mr. B ucher said.

After selling his interest in the firm in 1988, Mr. Hollinger became All en CO’s sanitary engineer. He retired in 1991.

The American Society of Civil Engineers’ Toledo chapter named him engine er of the year in 1991. He received an honorary doctorate in civil enginee ring from OH Northern University, his alma mater, in 1982.

"He had a lot of pride in the civil engineering profession," his son, Bruc e, said. "He was very ethical."

Mr. Hollinger graduated from Risingsun High School and received a bachelor ’s degree in civil engineering in 1949 from OH Northern. He later was a me mber of the school’s board of trustees for 17 years. During World W ar II he served with the 8th Air Force as a radio operator on a B17 bombe r, based in Eng. He was an active member of Lima Trinity United Method ist Church.

Mr. Hollinger is survived by his wife, the former Marjorie Stedcke, wh om he married June 4, 1949; sons, Ross, Bruce, and Mark; eight grandchildr en, and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at Chiles & Sons-Laman Funeral Home s’ Shawnee Chapel. A memorial service is set for 10:30 a.m. tomorrow in t he church. The family requests tributes to the Henry C Hollinger Scholarsh ip Fund at OH Northern University, the church memorial fund, or Lima Conva lescent Home Foundation.
