My grandfather was an Assistant Warder at Dartmoor Prison when father was born. The address on the birth certificate is 8, E? Quarters, Princetown.
On the 6th May 1885, he joined the Dorset Regiment giving his age as 18yrs 2 mths. In fact, he was only 16. He gave his occupation as a labourer. He served in the army, not continuously, between 6 th May 1885 and 5 th May 1902, when he was discharged on medical grounds as unfit for further service. During his time in the army, he served in the Mediterranean, Egypt and South Africa.
