Facts and Events
Source: History of Gallia County. H.H. Hardesty & Co., Publishers, Chicago and Toledo. 1882. Republished 1976. (And I know that the Gallia Co. Historical Society reprints these as needed cause I bought mine last year) Pg. 27 HENRY AUSTIN GILLETTE - Physician in Eureka, Clay township, came to this county in 1870. He was born in Rome township, Lawrence county, OH, April 8, 1839. His father, Alanson Gillette, was born in Schenectady county, New York, August 1802 and lives in Rome township, Lawrence county, OH. His mother Sarah F (Radford) Gillette, was born in Somersetshire, England, June 12, 1812 and died February 26, 1866. He was united in marriage with Anna D, daughter of Alexander B and Amanda F (Moss) Sollers, in Clay township, Gallia county, OH, November 27, 1862. She was born in Jefferson county, Kentucky, August 2, 1845 and has had only one child: Effie A, born November 9, 1863 who lives at home. Dr. Gillette held the office of corporation clerk from 1877 to 1879. He has also been a member of the schoolboard for six years, from 1876 to 1882. Postoffice address, Eureka, Gallia county, Ohio. And on Alanson, I had already found (likely you did too): CENSUS: 1880 Lawrence Co, OH - Rome Twp AGE OCCUPATION Born Father Born Mother Born Gillett, Alanson 78 Farmer NY CT CT Sarah wife 56 Keeping House OH Mass Mass Ella dau 25 @@ home OH NY Mass ?Paris ?Willi 22 step-dau OH NY Mass A discrepancy I see is the fact that the article says Sarah died in 1866 .... but I show Alanson with a wife Sarah in 1880!! But look at the age difference on the census between Alanson & that Sarah 22 yrs. My guess is that Alanson married another Sarah after Sarah #1 died in 1866.... what does everyone think?? I'm gonna check the FamilySearch.org files .... which BTW did turn out right for Alanson's Sarah Radford . OH.......and almost forgot!! Did you all find the info on Alanson Gillette being the one to develop the Rome Beauty apple?? It's on the Lawrence Register site, so I took it for granted that you had found the info? Gloria Subj: RE: Alanson Gillette's son in Gallia Co, OH 1882 article
P.S. Nice to have the info on Alanson and his family! |
