Henry Courtier was born in Bradford, Pa., Dec. 22, 1818, and died in La Valle, Wis., at the residence of his son, James Courtier, about midnight, Oct. 2nd, 1891. Mr. Courtier was one of the early settlers of Wisconsin, and about 45 years ago, while living in Dane County, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Ann Priest. Thirty-one years ago they came to Reedsburg, and four years later settled in the town of Ironton, which has since been their home. They were the parents of eight children, two of whom died in infancy, three daughters, who, shortly after their marriages, were called to the better land, and three surviving sons, James, of La Valle, Vincent, of Baraboo, and Edward who occupies the homestead in Ironton. Almost a year ago Mr. Courtier suffered a severe attack of lung fever from which he never fully recovered. Finding his health failing, four weeks before his death, he went to La Valle with the intention of consulting Dr. Worthy, but his disease had progressed too far; neither medical skill, nor loving care could arrest its progress. But hard as it was to bid adieu to his dear ones, death found him ready, and his triumph was complete. The funeral, conducted by Rev. John Steele, was held at his late residence, Oct. 4th, 1891, and his mortal remains laid at rest in the cemetery at Reedsburg. He will be greatly missed, and long remembered, as an upright citizen, and kind neighbor, and true friend. His widow and family have the heart-felt sympathy of the community.
