Like his brother William, Henry (Harry) floundered around, borrowed money from his mother and sister and had difficulty paying it back which infuriated his brother Joseph. He never really did land on his feet. According to Daisy Frances, he and Samuel were very much alike in disposition. The Detwiler's were family friends and in-laws of John M. and Ann Coup. That's likely where he got his middle name.

These notes and comments were made by Virginia Spearman to William A. Coup.

After their marriage in 1865, Harry and Sarah Coup lived in the Davidson's Georgetown home in Wayne County, Ohio. Before 1870 they moved to Easton where Harry had a farm on the south side of the Clinton Road, a little bit south and east of Dohner Lake. About 1875 Harry moved to Navarre, Ohio where he and his brother William operated a steam mill. After January 1878 Harry moved to the Davidson brick home outside of Smithville, Ohio. His daughter Mayme wrote to Lucy Pancoast that they couldn't have any lights when they went to bed and that she bumped her nose on the foot rail, seeing stars. In 1881 Harry wrote to William that he had just gotten new farming equipment, told all about his new stock and crops and hoped he would be able to continue farming at Easton. Mayme also wrote that she could remember her grandfather Davidson's big house. They didn't stay on the farm. They moved to Rittman, Ohio, where they lived a couple of years and then moved to Ashtabula in November 1883. They moved many times in Ashtabula and Harry tried many kinds of work.

This information is taken from a report on John Martin Coup by Lucy Pancoast.

Note by Ladona Stanley: Harry was quite seriously troubled with hay fever every August.
