Facts and Events
Henry Buckner was the only known member of Patrick Buckner's family to fight for the Confederacy. He enlisted in Company B of the 5th KY Infantry (Confederate) on 25 Oct 1861, around the same time his brother Overton and Overton's sons James and Harrison were preparing to enlist in the Union Army (all 3 in the 23rd KY Volunteers). Henry's military career didn't last very long, and after Kentucky was secured by the Union, he seems to have deserted and was captured by Union troops in 1863. As was usual in those cases, they released him on condition of taking an Oath of Allegiance. His nephew James was killed in action in Georgia in 1864, and after the end of the War, Henry seems to have returned to the family's original home in Scott Co. VA, where he was joined by his father Patrick. Towards the end of his life, he returned to where he had grown up in Carter Co. KY, perhaps not coincidentally after Overton and Harrison had moved to Arkansas. He and his wife Julia Bocook had 11 documented children, though not quite as many as Overton who had 13. |
