Henry Black was born on 16 January 1727, in Clogher, County Mayo, Ireland, his father, Thomas Black, was 43 and his mother, Mary Jones, was 38. He married SUSANNA "Catherine" McLean on 13 March 1750. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 7 daughters. He died on 2 October 1819, in Rockingham, Virginia, United States, at the age of 92.

John Black traced his ancestry back to Henry Black, born in the north of Ireland, Jan 16, 1727. he came to America in his youth and died in Rockingham Co., VA, Oct. 2, 1819. His wife, Susannah McClain, born Jan. 14, 1726, died Dec. 8, 1812. They had a son, John, born July 27, 1766, who married Alice Boyd. She was born Aug. 4, 1767, and died Aug. 21, 1811. Her husband survived until June 10, 1839.
