HENRY A. FLIKKEMA IS ACCIDENT VICTIM Henry A. Flikkema, who was a resident in this community for many years was a victim of a fatal accident which occurred in his home Thursday evening, December 13. He was preparing to retire and had started to go into the bathroom but by mistake opened the door which led to the basement and he fell the full length of the stairs. He had failed to turn on the lights which was the reason that he made the error. His grandson, Harold, who attends school here and made his home with his grandfather, was the only other occupant in the home and he went to the neighbors for assistance. The elderly gentleman was taken to the first floor of the home and a physician was called, but death occurred shortly after the accident. An inquest was held in Fay's undertaking parlors at eleven o'clock Friday Morning, with Coroner C.M. Frye in charge. The jury returned the verdict of accidental death caused by a fracture of the skull from falling down the cellar stairs. The jury was composed of J.E. Burkhardt, William Decker, Fred K. Bastian, Frank Monahan, Harry Post and C.W. Adams. Henry Albert Flikkema was born June 2, 1850, in The Netherlands, and in 1881 was united in marriage to Clara Hoben, the ceremony taking place in their native country. Three years later, they came to the United States, locating in Fulton. Later they went farming in Garden Plain township and twenty-five years ago retired and returned to Fulton to make their home. Four children were born to this union, Albert H. of Minneapolis, Minn., Mrs. Jacob Temple of Garden Plain, Ben H. of Garden Plain, and Helen, who passed away in 1925. Mrs. Flikkema also passed away before her husband, her death occurring the same year as her daughter's. Three grandchildren survive also, namely Clara Flikkema of St Paul, Minn., Harold and Louise Temple of Garden Plain. Mr. Flikkema was a member of the First Reformed church for many years and was a good Christian. He revered and honored God and knew Him in prayer. He loved his Lord. Funeral services were held at 1:30 o'clock Monday afternoon in the home and at 2:00 in the First Reformed church. The Rev. G. Van Pernis, pastor of the First Reformed church, conducted the Holland service, the Rev. G. Vander Linden, pastor of the Second Reformed church, preached the English sermon, and the Rev, H. Mollema, pastor of the Trinity Reformed church, had charge of the rites at the grave. During the Service, Mr. and Mrs. Mino Flikkema sang, "In the Garden", the piano accompaniment being played by David Flikkema. Pallbearers were Henry M. Flikkema, Henry J. Flikkema, Mino Flikkema, David Flikkema, John Flikkema of Fulton, and Albert Flikkema of Morrison. Interment was in the Fulton cemetery.
