William, I get my information from a book compiled by a Mrs. Bayless. According to the book, Adrian, born 1595 was the son of Jan Pietre DeWees [the spelling of DeWees changes alot] Adrian married Hillegond Govertsdr [widow of Philip Klaasz] Adrian was a friend of and dealer for Rembrandt and also owned a bookstore in Beverwijk, near Amssterdam. Children; Hendrick Adriaensz, Isaac and Catharina. Isaac married Trijntje Jans van Vollenhoven and later she remarried to Jan Barentsz, Catharina married Jan Martsz de Visscher and he too remarried to Margriet van Acnhoudt. Hendrick's children Gerrit, Jan, Williem, and Nelletje. Gerrit or Garrett, born 1640 married Zytian Lieuwes, their children were Willemyntie, Dievertie, Lambert, Ariaentie, Lambert [the first Lambert died as a baby], Hendrick, William, Lysbeth, and Cornelius, born 1682, New York, [ formerly New Amsterdam] they had a home on the island just outside the fort, because it was too near the fort they had to move to Smith St. and their home was torn down. The family moved to Germantown PA. Cornelius married Margaret Kuster, who was born 1690 in Kalden Kirchen, Germany and their children were John, Christina, Garrett, William Cornelius, and Samuel. DeWees House still stands near what was General Washington's Headquarters on Valley Forge Creek Road. Garrett was the father of three children ; William, Edward and Henry. Henry, born 1746, married Elizabeth Hughes, both died in Buncombe County NC. their children were John, Garrett, born 1773, James, Morgan, William, Nancy and Henry, several others died as babies. Garrett married Suzannah Palmer and their children were Mary Polly, Henry, Edmund, William Buck, Sarah, Nancy, Levi, Humphrey, and Lewis.Edmund married Stacy Elizabeth Anderson, they lived in Macon County [ the part which later became part of Cherokee Co]. Children were William Washington, Martha C., Garrett A., Lewis, Dorcas Elizabeth, Albert, Polly, Sarah, Nancy Aveline, Benjamin, Emmaline, Columbus, Miriam, Annanias, and Mary Euphenia. Some of the family moved on to Polk Co., Smith Co. and Bradley Co. Tennesse and who knows where. Parts of the family split back in the 1700's into Delaware and Kentucky. Some of Edmund's brothers and sister are buried in Buncombe and Madison Counties, William Buck is buried in Burningtown, Edmund is buried in Smith Co. TN. There seems to be several families that came from the Dutch Refrom Church in and around NY that came to the mountians of NC, TN and KY, some together. The book skips over to Tennessee and follows only a few of Edmunds children. Still trying to put together the "lost" families. I'm sure they were in theHanging Dog area, Edmund taught school at Murphy.

Comments We still do not have any positive proof as to what happened to Garret Hendrick's father Hendrick or his uncle Isaac, but it would be helpful to know if they did indeed come to New Netherlands and if they were indeed taken captive during the war with the British. The information in the DeWees Family Association Newsletter indicates that Isaac and or Hendrick may well have died in the East Indies, so this is not a totally new idea. The scenario advanced by the emails in this note proposes a reason for their being there.

Still unanswered is who is Lewis DeWees? What does the book by Mrs. Bayless say about him, if anything.

Note as well the book states that Adrian Hendricks DeWees father is identified as Jan Pietre DeWees. What else can we possibly learn about him?"
