He served as a Private in the War of 1812, 1st Reg't VT, Capt Elijah W. Wood's Co. Following this service Heman Hill returned to Georgia and, on 15 March 1816, married Charlotte Cook of Milton, VT. Charlotte was a sister of Nathan Cook. Listed in Georgia, VT in 1820 with two sons under 10, himself 16-26, a daughter under 10 and his wife 16-26. Other Hill families listed are Lyman, Jonathon, Alden and Terner(?). He was still in Georgia, VT in 1830 with:males 4=5-10, 1=10-15, 1=30-40female 1<5, 1=10-15, 1=30-40Other families listed nearby in 1830 are Lyman, Ansell B., Alden, Simeon and Gaius Hill.During the 1840's the Cook's and Hill's migrated across the ice of Lake Champlain to Chateaugay, NY.Listed in 1850 census as a farmer (54) with $1,000 of land with his wife Charlotte (53) and family plus a 9 month old grandson (child of Ami and Lucy) named Anderson Hill.He received 120 Ac under Land Warrant 9,931 in 1855, for his service in the War of 1812.Listed as Hiram Hill in 1860 (65), a farmer with $1,500 of land and $500 of personal property with just Charlotte (65).Listed as age 75 in 1870 census, a farmer with $1500 of land and $600 of property. His wife Charlotte is listed with him at age 73.He wrote his will 13 Oct 1870. After his death, Nathan filed his Oath of Executor on 1 Aug 1881. The will states that he is 75 +, and that his wife is the former Charlotte Cook. He leaves her the farm of 70 Acres, part of Lot 65, Township 7 of the old Military Tract. If any of his estate remained after the death of his wife, he directed $100 to son Wallace and $50 to David. He assigned Nathan and David as executors, with Putnam B. Fisk and Eli H. Persons as witnesses.Charlotte recieved $8/mo widow's pension, Cert# 11,308 beginning 2 Nov 1878.
