The above URL is the source of the following notes. Heman Doyle, b. December 31 1809 or 1811 in Vermont- d. Sept 11 1891, Cal.: Heman (frequently misspelled Herman or Hiram) was actually a fairly prominent lawyer in several states, first the east coast and then in the Gold Rush-era west. He married a New Yorker in Alzina Jackman and they had three daughters. A census record from 1850 has them living in Rochester, New York. In 1850 Heman went west with a party that included John Shinn, Heman's future son-in-law. While John Shinn would go back to New Jersey for awhile, I believe Heman stayed out west (a directory from the time lists him as coming to California in 1850 and San Joaquin co. in 1852). In 1853 John married Mariah Doyle, the middle daughter of Heman and Alzina in New Jersey. The family which soon grew to include a son, Heman Doyle Shinn came back out west and settled in the San Joaquin region of California. Heman Doyle became a prominent lawyer and justice of the peace in Placerville, Woodbridge and parts of western Nevada from the 1850's to his death in 1881. He was even the first District Attorney of Carson Valley, Nevada. In the 1880 census Heman lists his father as being from Ireland and his mother from Connecticut. Alzina Jackman, b. March 27 1810, Livonia or Mendon, New York- d. Feb 4 1890, San Joaquin, California: Alzina was a daughter of Moses Jackman and his first wife, Rhoda Collins (d. Oct 8 1811, New York) who were married in 1804. Her siblings include: Orlen Collins Jackman (b. Feb 26 1805), Flora Jackman (b. June 10 1806, Livonia, Livingston, New York) married Hollis Daggett, and Cyrus Jackman (b. Jan 3 1808, Livonia). After Rhoda died, Moses remarried Betsey Beecher (a relative of the Lyman Beecher family) and they had seven children: Emeritt, Moses L, Matilda A., Rachel B., Hezekiah R., Charles R., and George W. Moses died Nov 24 1861 in Livonia. Family of Heman Doyle and Alzina Jackman: 1. Mariah Adelaide Doyle, b. Oct 10 1832 in New York. She married John R. Shinn on Dec 23 1852 in New Jersey. They had three children: Heman Doyle Shinn, Denver Judson Shinn and Ida May/Mae Shinn. Mariah died in July of either 1916 or 1917 in San Joaquin, California. 2. Rhoda Melissa Doyle, b. Apr 30 1834 in New York. I believe Rhoda must have died young as she is not in the 1850 census with her sisters. 3. Frances P. Doyle, b. Oct 21 1837 in New York- d. Nov 11 1869, California. She married a Smith (I believe his name was William H) and they had a son, 1. Frank Doyle Smith, b. Aug 28 1857, probably in San Joaquin co. Following his mother's death at a young age, Frank was raise by her relatives, In the 1870 census he is living with his grandparents, Heman and Alzina in Elkhorn. At some point, Frank moved to Montezuma, Solano co. He is listed as a clerk there in the 1880 census. On Jan 15 1890, Frank married Minnie Lee Limbaugh there. They would have two sons, Leslie Lee Smith (b. May 23 1891) and Kenneth Clyde Smith (b. July 15 1893- d. Apr 14 1940, San Francisco). Kenneth married Anna Harriet Kelsey (b. July 9 1897, Berkeley, Cal.- d. March 22 1989, Alameda, Cal.) and they had two children. |
