- ↑ Diary entries from daughter-in-law Agnes around this time show that she was admitted to hospital the day before (Entries in Nana's typical brief style read:Thurs 17th: Grandma Hosp; Friday 18th: "Gran Hen. died 6pm - wire, Isobel rang 11:30pm Wgtn."

- ↑ The 1871 census leads me to believe I've finally found the snippet (tiniest snippet) of truth behind the family story Great Aunt Millie used to tell - that her mother was a Lady in Waiting for the Queen Mother. The dates never matched that snippet (and it would have been an extremely unlikely appointment for a farmer's daughter from Maxton), but I've finally found Helen in the 1871 census, working as a housemaid in the household of Sir William SCOTT (of Scotland) in Belgravia, rather a long way from her home in the Scottish Borders. This is her occupation on her emigration record 4 years later as well. The dates certainly fits, and I've not found her in Scotland in 1871 at all. Sorry Aunt Millie, but it is rather fun digging around trying to find those tiny snippets of truth behind your (tall) stories.
- ↑ on the "Wellington", under Cpt Cowan, from Glasgow, assisted passage £16 paid by govt. Passenger list shows: "Ellen WIGHT, 27, from Northumberland, housemaid". Arrived 19 Mar 1876. (No others from same area or Borders, no obviously connected names)
