Facts and Events
Helen Standing was the oldest of three daughters in her family. With her husband, she raised a son and two daughters. She was a tall, slender lady who looked very refined on Sundays when she wore a simple, but elegant, hat to church. She enjoyed working on "JUMBLE" puzzles in the daily newspaper and reading novels. She brewed a wonderful cup of green tea in a blue ceramic teapot every day and she made delicious rice croquettes for holiday meals. As a young woman she worked at a bank in Stromsburg. In later years she and her husband were proprietors of Swanson's Store, a dry goods business, selling clothing, shoes, fabrics and sewing supplies, as well as appliances to those in the small Nebraska community. |
