My grandmother, Helen Marguerite Odiorne. I am so desperate for help in finding out who her parents were. She was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 3, 1892. I have a christening picture of her at about a month old taken at Davis Bros. in Portsmouth. What I was told was that she was adopted by an aunt and uncle, Eben and Mary Odiorne, when she was an infant. I found a book at StrawberryBanke entitled Rambles About Portsmouth by Ray Brighton which lists my grandmother in Edith Brewster's first kindergarten class. She grew up on Marcy Street. She called Emma Palfrey her sister. My mother always referred to her as AuntEm. My grandparents lived on Pleasant Street until they moved to Ocala, Florida in 1954 after my grandfather retired from the navy yard. (They also lived in Hampton, Rye, and Somersworth). My grandparents, along with my uncle and mother, also lived with Emma Palfrey on Marcy Street until Emma died. On my grandmother's death certificate, which was filled out by the funeral home here inOcala and by someone who didn't know how to spell, it says: Helen Margarette Mailhiot (Mailhiot is her married name) Name of father: Ebon Ordione Maiden name of mother: (not known) Honneyfield I suppose my grandfather was so upset, he didn't pay much attention to the spelling. Eben had a younger sister named Ann Merry. (She is also known as Dorothy Ann) She married a Spinney and had many children with her last child born in 1879. Then she married a man by the name of Hunefield. The book doesn't mention any children. My grandmother was born in 1892. Ann Merry would have been 49 when my grandmother was born. Possible? Who knows. I have heard that my grandmother's father worked on a ship. I have heard the name of Lyon or Lyons somewhere, but I really don't know about that. I heard that her real parents died in an accident. I don't know about thateither. I am really stuck and I need some help. I've written to Brooklyn records for Helen Odiorne, Helen Hunefield and Helen Lyon or Lyons. No record. They said that 25% of the births before 1900 were not recorded. The 1900 census puts my grandmother in Eben's household as "adopted" parents unknown. Could AnnMerry have had my grandmother and let her brother Eben and Mary raise her. They wouldn't have adopted an infant on their own because Eben was 57 years oldand Mary was 47. She died when my grandmother was 6 or 7. They had their own children. Ann Merry live across the street from Eben on Marcy Street. I have apicture that my grandmother kept with her and three other woman sitting on a porch. I have no idea who they are. I have a very very old etched amethyst necklace that my grandmother referred to as the Odiorne necklace. I thought maybethe Mott family bible might list something. I believe one of Ann Merry's daughter is a Mott. If you or you know anyone who can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. OBJE: C:\RPSLITE\PHOTOS\Old Family Photos\Mailhiots\OPNana.jpg
