ELKHART -- Helen Marie Banter Hertsel, 92, of Woodland Manor, died at 5:45 p.m. Monday (Jan. 24, 2005) at home. She was born July 13, 1912, in Grant County to Frank and Mae (Lugar) Marks. She married Oakley O. Banter. He preceded her in death. She married Murlin C. Hertsel on Dec. 12, 1970, in Elkhart. He died May 5, 2002. She is survived by one daughter, Maxine F. (Larry D.) Wheeler of Elkhart; two sons, Donald F. (Mardel) Banter and Larry E. Banter, both of Elkhart; three stepdaughters, Joan Ward of Elkhart, and Carol Jacobs and Marline Oliveria, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and several step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Waley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home & Crematory, 700 E. Jackson Blvd., Elkhart, where the funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Carl Henry of Northside Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Rice Cemetery.

Mrs. Hertsel was formerly employed at the Buescher and Martin band instrument companies. She was a Miami Indian and very proud of her Indian heritage. She and her second husband lived their lives together at Woodland Manor.

Memorials may be given to Alzheimer's Association.
