WINF: Y
Grandma was very kind to me and doted on me as a child. She was hard of hearing due to a flu epidemic when her daughter, Dorothy was very little. Grandma loved to sew and worked part time at Jones Department Store (downtown Kansas City) making hats while going to school. In the early 1900's, all hats were made by hand and the customer would come in and choose a style of hat she wanted. The hat was then made up in muslin and the customer would try the hat on and changes, if any were made. The customer would pick out the material for the hat. The cheapest hats were sold for $7.50??? After her marriage to Grandpa, (Roy), Grandma became a housewife and stayed in the home. She died of a stroke in December, 1973. She is buried at Ft. Leavenworth, KS. in the same gravesite as Grandpa (her husband Roy)
According to a letter written by Dora G. Winfrey on Aug 19, 1956, Raymond and his sister Hazel Vern Winfrey Kennedy were born on the Winfrey family farm of their grandmother, Nancy E. Carey Winfrey about 5 miles east of Carrollton. the doctor in attendance was Dr. Williams of Standish, Missouri.
