HCS' date of birth is recorded in her father's family bible. Her birth certificate also says that she was b. 22 Nov. 1922, daughter of Wm. Z. Simpson and Hattie Batchelor. She was born at home at Redfield, AR, at 3:30 P.M., Dr. T.J. Cunningham the physician in attendance. The document was filed on 9 Dec. 1922.

HCS grew up in Redfield, graduating from Redfield high school as salutatorian of her class. Though she hoped to go to college and pursue a teaching career, as her two oldest sisters had done, by the time she was prepared to enter college, the family could not afford to send her to school. She went instead to Draughon's Business College in Little Rock, and worked for several years before her marriage as a secretary for the Schlumberger company in Little Rock, then for the Veterans' Administration.

The 14 Feb. 1998 letter of Bobbie Sue Williams Turner cited in file of HCS's mother has a reminiscence about HCS during her youth in Redfield, AR: "Clotine and Margaret were such lovely girls and always so pleasant to be around...."

I have a copy of HCS' certificate of membership in First Baptist church of El Dorado, AR, showing that she was received on 23 Aug. 1959 by letter by Rev. Wm. Walter Warmath, pastor.

After the death of her husband in 1969, HCS returned to the Veterans' Administration, where she worked as a finance officer. On several occasions, she was named the outstanding employee of the Little Rock VA office. HCS now lives in retirement in Little Rock.
