Hattie (Knoll) was born on January 11, 1911, on the family farm near Roseland, the daughter of Albert and Alice (Bulthuis) Knoll. She received her education in Roseland Township.

On September 16, 1936, Hattie was united in marriage to Edward Poortvliet at the parsonage of Roseland Reformed Church. This union was blessed with eight children. Following their marriage they lived in Roseland until the early 1940's when they purchased a farm in rural Roseland. They continued to farm and live on the farm until 1968, when they moved into Roseland. Hattie moved to Rice Care Center in Willmar in 2000. Edward was called home to be with the Lord. on April 18, 2002.

She was a member of Roseland Reformed Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was also active with the women's groups within the church and participated in neighborhood Bible studies.

Hattie loved people and loved her family dearly. She was a great cook and made everything from homemade bread to potato soup to canned meat. She did a great deal of food preservation, both freezing and canning food to provide for her family of 10. In later years, her extended family looked forward to and enjoyed her homemade cooking as well.

Ed and Hattie welcomed everyone who came to their door. Hattie was always up for a good game of Dominoes, King's Corner, or a famous "Spoons" game. She was a very social person and enjoyed a good cup of coffee or tea with family and/or friends. In more recent years, the afternoon coffee at the care center was a highlight in her day. She will be dearly missed.

Hattie went home to be with the Lord on Saturday March 8, 2008, surviving are her children, John (and Ruth) Poortvliet of Roseland, David (and Jan) Poortvliet of Albuquerque, NM, Bob Poortvliet of Comfrey, Alda (and Donelly) Jahnke of Buchanan Dam, TX, Lois Hibbits of Burnsville, Lynn Elm of Bloomington, Gary (and Karen) Poortvliet of Comfrey and Marv Poortvliet of Eagan; 18 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
