  • Hartwell Cocke, was son of Richard Cocke and Elizabeth Hartwell, daughter of John Hartwell, of Surry.
  • He lived at "Mt. Pleasant", on James River, and represented Surry County in the house of burgesses from 1758 to 1773.
  • He married Anne Ruffin, daughter of John Ruffin.
  • His will, dated May 29, 1772, was proved in Surry, August 25, 1772.
  • He was father of John Hartwell Cocke, who was member of the state convention of 1788.
