It is not clear who had custody of Annetje Hanse's child, Hartman, although it is know that his uncle John Harmensen and Daniel Shotwell had charge of his estate. In a codicil to his will, dated Oct. 19, 1700, Hans Harmensen, the grandfather, provided for the child as follows (NJA:21:145 & orig. Lib. in Trenton):

   " Know all men by these present that I Hans Harmensen, being very sick and weak and being desireous that my Grandson Hartman Claus now a Child may not bee wronged by any portion I gave by my will to his mother deceased, doo hereby desire my son John Harmensen and Daniell Shotwell too take upon the care of improveing such legacy portion or Estate soo given & becomeing payable to ye said Hartman Claus from tyme to tyme as if I were living to do ye same myself till hee shall ataine his full Age of one and twenty years and I doe hereby declare that it is my desire and intent that after my decease noe other person shall have anything to doe with ye manageing or improveing of what portion shall come to ye child be ye sd. John Harmensen & Daniell Shotwell under pretense of gardion or otherwise howsoever."
