Harry Ripley was born on 21 Dec 1874, at 13 Alma Rd, Mile End, the seventh child of cattle drover and general labourer Henry Ripley and needlewoman Amelia Eliza Folder Sale. Amelia had married at the age of 23 to "lathe render" Edward Benningfield, and it has not yet been established whether Edward died or the couple simply parted. No marriage record has yet been found for Henry and Amelia so it is possible that they couldn't marry because she was still married to Edward Benningfield. In any case, Henry and Amelia's first child Henry William was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Mile End Old Town in 1865. Henry William died in 1868 (before Harry was born) at the age of 4 years old. Harry's other elder siblings were Samuel Edward, Amelia Maria, William George, George, and Maria. Harry and his brother Thomas James were twins. After Harry and Thomas their siblings Robert Edward James, Joseph Walter, and John were born. The family lived at 13 Alma Rd from at least 1874 until the 1881 census.

Harry and several of his siblings attended South Grove school. Image:South Grove School (former), Mile End 02.jpg

Harry Ripley was baptised along with his brothers Thomas and Robert at Holy Trinity on the 19th of July 1882, by which time the family had moved just around the corner to 12 Wilson St.

By 1890 the Ripley family had moved nearby to 54 St. Dunstan's Rd in Stepney, where Harry lived until at least 1901 and his mother Amelia remained until 1910. Harry's father Henry died in 1893 from pneumonia. The 1890s also saw the marriage of Harry's siblings, with Samuel (now a cattle drover) wedding Emma Taylor in 1894, Amelia marrying painter John Montague in 1896, and George (a bricklayer) marrying Mary Ann Potts in 1899. Harry was listed as a van guard in the 1891 census.

By 1906 Harry was working as a coalman and living at 230 Bow Common Lane with Elizabeth Clark, daughter of blacksmith George William Clark and Harriet Eliza Chipperfield. The Clark family had lived at 230 Bow Common Lane since at least 1897. On 12 Feb 1906 Harry and Elizabeth were witnesses to Harry's brother Robert's marriage to Emily Fisher. Harry and Elizabeth were married on Christmas Day 1906 at the Holy Trinity Church in Mile End, witnessed by George Collender and Florence Clark (Elizabeth's sister-in-law). Harry's twin Thomas married Elizabeth Bailey at St. Thomas' Church in Stepney on the same day, so it must have been a joyous Christmas for the Ripley family.

Harry and Elizabeth briefly lived at 223 Bow Common Lane in 1907 when their first child Harry George was born on 12 Nov. Elizabeth's brother Benjamin Clark and his wife Minnie were living at the same address on 21 Sep 1907 (according to their daughter Florence's baptism record) but Minnie and her children were admitted to Mile End Workhouse on 19 Nov 1907, just a week after Harry George Ripley was born. It's also possible that Elizabeth's brother Henry Clark and his wife & daughter were living at no. 223 at the same time, because they lived at that address from at least 1910 to 1939.

Harry George Ripley was baptised at the same church his father had been, Holy Trinity in Mile End, and the rest of Harry and Elizabeth's children were baptised at St. Luke's Church, Mile End.

By 1909 Harry, Elizabeth and Harry Jr. were living at 49 Ropery Street when daughter Elizabeth Amelia was born 13 Jul 1909 and baptised on 1 Aug. In the 1911 census Elizabeth's widowed mother Harriet was living with the family. A few months later son Joseph Walter Ripley was born on 10 May 1911 and named after Harry's younger brother Joseph Walter Ripley who died aged 10 (Harry was 18 at the time).

In 1911 and 1913 Harry's occupation was listed as being a paint manufacturer and varnish maker's carman.

By 1913 the family had moved to 267 Bow Common Lane, where sadly their son Joseph died on 1 March 1913 aged just 21 months from bronchopneumonia, a common killer of children - two of Elizabeth (Clark) Ripley's brothers, both named Joseph, died from pneumonia before she was born. On a happier note just a few months later Harry & Elizabeth's son George William Ripley was born on 2 Jun 1913.

1914 was a sad year for the Ripley-Clark family, with Elizabeth's mother Harriet passing away on 20 of Sep at the Mile End Infirmary, and Harry's mother Amelia at their home on the 6 Oct. Both mothers had been living with Harry at 267 Bow Common Lane at the time of their deaths. 1915 brought better times with the birth of Harry and Elizabeth's last child, Lilian Harriet, on 5 Jan 1915.

Many of the Clark family lived nearby in Bow Common Lane in the 1910s and 1920s. From at least 1896-1939 Elizabeth's brother and sister-in-law George and Frances Clark and their family lived at 249 Bow Common Lane, and brother Henry lived with his wife Florence at number 223 from at least 1910-1939. By 1922 Elizabeth's nephew George Samuel Clark (son of George William Clark) had moved with his wife to 247 Bow Common Lane. When Harry and Elizabeth's son George William Ripley married Vera "Peg" Young in 1939 he set up house in nearby Lockhart Street. So despite living in one of the largest cities in the world the Ripley-Clark family stayed close geographically, and presumably socially.

One of Harry's granddaughters says that Harry was a quiet sort of man who was more likely to be at home reading while his wife Elizabeth was at the pub. He worked in delivery for a brewery. Harry lived to see his son George marry in September 1939 but died before his eldest son Harry was killed in the war in 1940. Harry suffered a brain injury when he fell into a cart, and the horse returned with him in the cart to the depot. The coroners inquest (held 20 Oct 1939 by WH Whitehorse, coroner for London S E District) reported that he died on 17 Oct 1939 at St. Olave's Hospital in Rotherhithe of a cerebral haemorrhage due to natural causes. He was buried at Tower Hamlets Cemetery on 24 Oct 1939.
