Harry and Evelyn had eight children together: Brenda, Arthur, Larry, Dennis, Edward, Ronnie, Debra, and Stanley. Arthur died in a car accident in July 1980 at the young age of 30.

Harry worked on his parents farm in Avery Co. until he joined the Army to fight WWII. After serving his country, he came back to Avery Co. He later worked at the School for the Death in Morganton, NC. He eventually moved to Rutherford Co. where he worked as the warehouse manager at Grindstaff's Interiors with his brother Ervin, until Ervin passed away.

Harry was know for his yearly gardens. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Bostic until he was no longer able to attend due to health reasons.

Harry was welcomed home to heaven on September 12, 2009. He was surrounded by his wife of nearly 64 years and his children. He was loved and is sorely missed.
