March 16, 1942: Harry Cahill left Kingston, Jamaica on one of DeGorgio's small cargo freighters hauling fruit to New York City. The ship was 90 miles off of Cape Hattaras, NC when it was torpedoed by a Nazi U-boat at 8:45pm. The ship sunk within 3 minutes of taking the hit. A survivor said he saw the Captain, Harry and several members of the crew at the impact point. All the lifeboats were destroyed except for 2 life rafts. One raft held 6 crewmen, 2 passengers and a 7 year old boy, and the other held 6 more members of the crew. While approaching the sinking ship the U-boat gunned down one of the rafts. After the ship went down the Nazi sub pulled up to the remaining raft and asked one of the survivors the name of the ship they had just sunk. The man asked the sub commander what was the idea behind sinking a boat full of bananas and killing all it's passengers. The Nazi answered, in good English, "This is war my boy!" Only 6 crew members survived the attack, while 44 people, including Harry died that day.
