From "Shawangunk Hearths" by Frank Metz as told to Vera Seely. The first postmaster that I knew (in Walkill) was Harrison McElhone. He was the grand father of Mrs. May DuBois Ressel. We had four mail trains a day, 7:36 a.m., and 4 p.m., south; 11 a.m. and 6:14 p.m. north. Ephram Dubois met each train and carried two mail bags from the railroad station to the post office on a bicycle. One bag would be over his shoulder and the other would be over the cross bar. Postage for letters was two cents, post cards one cent. In 1900 Everett B. DuBois bought the post office property. In 1904, Mr. DuBois was appointed postmaster and he put his father-in-law, Harrison McElhone, in charge of it. ...

I have in my possesssion an old book in which is recorded a program that appears to be a Sunday School home talent show. This was in the year of 1878. Lottie Terwilliger's name appears on the program, along with such names as Frank Wilkin, Josiah Phinney, Emma Wilkins, Harry Millspaugh, Anna and Ida McElhone, and many more whom I do not know. ...
