Headline: MEMPHIS AREA DEATHS THROUGH SATURDAY, FEB. 20 Publication Date: February 21, 1999 Source: The Commercial Appeal Memphis, Shelby Co., TN Obituary: HARRIET BLACK STOVALL, 74, of Memphis, died Friday at Baptist Memorial Hospital East. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Park Rotunda with entombment in Memorial Park Mausoleum. Memorial Park Funeral Home has charge. She was a communicant at Holy Communion and a member of the Bridge Club, Our Home and Garden Club and Les Passees. Mrs. Stovall, the widow of Dr. Robert O. Black, leaves three daughters, D. Black of Sunnyvale, CA., B. Watson of Germantown and M. Black of Memphis; a brother, W. Howe of Memphis, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be sent to St. Peter Manor or the charity of the donor's choice. END

Harriet was born 5 years after her older brother. She described her childhood as carefree but frugal, having grown up during the depression. Her maid-cook Savannah was an integral part of her life, often teaching her about basic life lessons. Her parents were not wealthy, but could afford household help. They were quite frugal with their money in many ways, yet bought quite expensive things for their home. They helped to found the University Club and Memphis Country Club. Her parents didn't attend church so Harriet joined a Methodist church, on her own. She was religious for the rest of her life. She attended Central High School in Memphis was was quite popular, belonging to DBS sorority and other clubs. She was described as a beautiful girl. She attended camp in Colorado for many summers, often riding horses and enjoying the mountains, while she became acquainted her her mother's family in Denver. She attended 1 year of college (Steven's in MO) and married Bob a month after her freshman year.

She lived in different cities with and while her husband was in the Army, settling in Memphis in her mid-twenties. When widowed in 1964 she worked in real estate, public relations for a bank and marketing for a bakery. She married B. Stovall April 1968 and remained married for 4 years (12/1972). She took care of both her mother as well as his mother in their later years.
