Harm Jannes Evers was born on November 3, 1925 in Gramsbergen. At the age of 8, he started his musical career by playing piccolo in the local wind band Crescendo. Evers played several instruments, but was eventually accepted as clarinetist/violinist with the Staff Band of the 1st Infantry Regiment (now the Johan Willem Frisokapel) in Assen in 1950. He played with this band for 30 years and left it in November 1980 when he reached the age of retirement. As well as playing in the band, he also was a teacher at various music schools. At the age of 40, he began studying music theory with the well-known wind music composer, Piet van Mever, who died in 1985. This was the start of his career as a composer and arranger. His first composition was the march Ameland in 1972, and he now has written 600 works for wind band and/or drum band.
