Harlan Weeks Buckland, 82, died peacefully on February 2, 2004 at the Stratton VA Medical Center. He had lung cancer. Mr. Buckland was born in Newtonville, N.Y. to Harold W. Buckland, a minister with the Troy Conference of United Methodist Churches and Jean Millar Buckland. As a minister's son, he moved frequently during his childhood, but he always thought of Granville, N.Y. as his home. After graduating from Union College in 1943, he joined the Army Air Corps as a radio operator and gunner, serving with the 310th B25 Mitchell bombardment group in the Mediterranean Theatre. He was forced to parachute to safety on several occasions, the last time landing near enemy lines during a combat mission through the Brenner Pass. He made fast friendships in the war and lost many before it was over. This was all the harder as it fell to him to contact the families and deliver the belongings of those in his crew who had not survived. Mr. Buckland held a variety of jobs in Vermont and New York. He retired from Child's Hospital where he worked as a security guard. Survivors include his sister, Jean Buckland Evans; brother-in-law, Hiram Evans of Pawlet, Vt.; four nieces, Susan McDougall, Rebecca Evans, Megan Evans and Ann Evans; two grandnieces; and six grandnephews. A memorial service will be held at Westview Homes, 680 Central Avenue, Albany, Monday, February 9 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Senior Services of Albany, 25 Delaware Avenue, Albany, NY 12210.
