    Hannibal enlisted in the Federal Army on 22 Feb, 1864 in Glenville, Gilmer Co., WV. for a period of 3 years. His name appears on a muster roll dated 08 Mar, 1864 at Wheeling, WV as a rank of private for the 39th Regiment WV Infantry. His description was blue eyes, grey hair, light complexion, 5'7".

    He was wounded on 19 Sept., 1864 during the Battle of Opequon, near Winchester, VA by a musket bullet which passed through and fractured the lower third of his left thigh. The thigh was amputated the same day in a field hospital near Winchester. He was discharged due to his disability on 17 Jan, 1865 at the US General Hospital, Cumberland, MD. by Dr. J. B. Lewis, Surgeon US Volunteers in charge of US General Hospital. At discharge he gave his address to be at the Town of Glenville, Gilmer County, West Virginia. His actual residence was located on the side of the hill behind the "Old Holbert Home" overlooking the mouth of Lower Big Run of Sinking Creek, Gilmer Co., WV.
