Research Notes

  • Carrie's father, Noel, abandoned his wife and small children in Cincinnati and went to California where he joined the stage troupe of the famous actress Lola Montez, became her lover, and died in a mysterious death at sea in 1856 while in her company.
  • Supposedly, following his death, Carrie was shipped off to Mrs. Willard's Seminary in Troy, NY to be educated at Lola Montez' expense - but this is unlikely as there is no known record of her as a student there.
