Research notes

There is much controversy and confusion about Hanna Jane Lower's life.

The book "Portrait and Biographical Record" says that Hanna Jane was a second wife of Daniel. It also says that she, "was a fine penman and had enjoyed the benefit of instruction in the high school at Cincinnati". This must have been during the time her father (Dr. John Strange Lower) was in medical school there.

The book says nothing about daughter Flora Belle, before mentioning Daniel's next marriage (which it says was the third) to the widow Hannah Bray, and giving the impression that Hanna Jane had died.

However, there is the wild story on Ancestry.com, which says that Hanna Jane was "sent away" in 1863 as the result of an illicit relationship, and Daniel gave Flora Belle to the George E. Sutton family to raise as their own. However, it says that Flora Belle retained the Haskett surname!
