Facts and Events
Two men named Hamilton Reynolds in North Carolina. Beware of record confusion. (by Tammy Reynolds Hensel) 1) Hamilton Reynolds, b. 1745 in Virginia or N.C. and d. 1814 in Rutherford, N.C. Married Sarah Lee/Lea abt 1767. His children listed in his Will are: Elijah, George, Elizabeth, Eunice, Thomas, John, and Jesse. He cannot be the son of William Reynolds and Henrietta Hamilton of Virginia as appears on some genealogies, because he was born 11 years before their marriage. If he had a revolutionary war record it has been confused with that of the other Hamilton Reynolds. Y-DNA results for my father, a descendant of his son John, shows no connection to the family line of William Reynolds. In fact, the results suggest a name change somewhere in the lineage as matches appear to surnames Hart and Daughtery with genetic distance of 2 at 111 markers. Autosomal testing of several of John's descendants shows matches to other descendants of Hamilton and Sarah, as well as to Lea and Magness (John's wife's maiden name) families. Conclusion is that the name change happened with Hamilton or one of his ancestors. Further comparisons with a Daugherty match suggest a common ancestor at about the 17th to early 18th century. 2) Hamilton Reynolds, b. 1761 in Anson, N.C. and d. 1851 in McNairy, TN, was most likely the son of William Reynolds and Henrietta Hamilton of Virginia, although I don't know if it is yet proven. He married Rachel Clement(s). His children were: Elizabeth, Hugh, Nancy, Isaac Clements, Polly/Mary, and Millie/Millage Hamilton. He is proven as a Revolutionary War hero according to http://www.mcnairytnhistory.com/images/Hamilton_Reynolds.pdf. However, since many records for these two men have been applied to each of them, some of the "proof" of Hamilton R. #2 as Patriot, could actually be records for Hamilton R. #1. References
