Guy met a friend on his way to the market when he was about 14. They hopped a train and traveled all over the U.S. He joined the Navy and served 1904-1912. He served on the USS Wilmington and USS Brooklyn, and was stationed on the USS Brooklyn during the time John Paul Jones' body was transported to the U.S. from Cherbourg, France. One of his many tales was that the crew was locked in a warehouse in Dijon so they would be contained in one area, but they managed to break out within hours and it took the Marines 3 days to round them up.
