Nickname: Bud
US. Marine Corps. participated in at least 3 Pacific invasions
As a young Marine, "Bud" participated in at least three Pacific Island
invasions, ending with Bouginesville. He was wounded on
Bougainsville while driving a truck back to the beach to obtain
additional ammunition. A Japanese soldier had a tree ready to fall and
cut the rope causing it to land on his truck. He was pinned in the truck
for several hours until help arrived. In the meanwhile, he was bit all
over his body by ants. Sent to New Zealand for medical treatment, then
assigned as a guard at the Marine Brig at the Portsmouth Naval Yard.
Bud never could swim. During one invasion they dropped his company on a sandbar that was several hundred feet from the shore and they had to swim to shore. He said he waded over to the next landing craft was unloading some tanks and he climbed aboard and came in with them.
