According to her daughter, Amelia, Grace was never officially adopted. She was from Alabama. Her parents were killed and her Grandmother could not afford, financially or emotionally, to raise her. She was originally taken by another couple but the husband became very jealous of her, so she was returned to the agency. Momma Susie took her home and kept her. When Auten, her husband, began to explore who her real parents were, Grace broke into tears and told him she had only one mother, Momma Susie.
