(quote): Howell in his History of Southampton (1887) states that William Ludlam had sons-in-law "Caleb Corwithy, Samuel King and Thomas Scudder, as by his will." That statement has been accepted as a fact by many later writers. I have found nothing to support it, over a period of fifteen years. Certainly the will ... gives it no support. ... As to Caleb Corwithy, I find no tie-in whatsoever. [S2]

Countering that, Colonial Families of Long Island, New York and Connecticut says (quote): This critique is entirely correct wherein it states that the will gives Mr. Howell's statement no support, even though the latter was quite specific as to the names of the sons-in-law, and as to the relationships. ... And goes on to say a letter from Arthur S. Warwell to the author claimed to see a quitclaim dated 9 Jun 1666 of William Ludlam witnessed by Caleb Carwithen. ... (quote): From the foregoing the reader will observe that independently of Mr. Howell's statement there is testimony that there was a record of Thomas Scudder, Caleb Carwithy and Samuel King having been sons-in-law of the first William Ludlam. The reader will note further that proof still exists that Thomas Scudder and Caleb Carwithy were associated in a significant manner with the sons of the deceased William Ludlam. All of these, plus the fact that Thomas and Mary (Ludlam) Scudder had a daughter who was given the rare name of Clemence (for Mary Ludlam's mother, undoubtedly), point clearly to the correctness of Mr. Howell's statement.
