Godfrey, you see, was a convict, tried at the Old Bailey in 1847 and exiled to Australia on the ship Hashemy which arrived in June 1849, one of the last ships of that sort. From what I've found so far, he lived fairly tumultuously through the early 1850s, with citations for skipping his area of freedom, public drunkenness, fighting a constable, racing horses through town, etc. etc., and then he became businesslike, and mostly prosperous, although he seems to have gone bankrupt a time or two. Was later elected a city councillor of Brisbane, and at his death he and his family were hailed as among the most-respected members of that community. (Source: W. Jones)
